Hiya, I’m Mel Hurst, aka SugarMama.

I create gorgeous cakes in any theme you can imagine. You dream it – I can make it! My cakes not only look spectacular – they taste amazing!  What started out as a passion to create birthday cakes for my kids, has turned into a sort after commodity. I am completely self taught.

It gives me great pleasure to create art in cake that translates into happy memories that will be remembered for many, many years to come.

I am also a proud mum to my son and daughter. I have been happily married to my best friend and soul mate Avi since 1993. We are originally from India, though I am Anglo-Indian (my grandparents were British); we moved to New Zealand in 2000. I have been a flight Attendant for most of my employed years and just closed that chapter in 2012 after my daughter was born. I am also the CEO of my Company Mel’s Gourmet Foods – we manufacture gourmet Indian food for delis and supermarkets in New Zealand & overseas.

I own a designer Cake Studio called Sugar and Spice Cakes. Today I run my spice brand Mel’s and Sugar and Spice Cakes from a HACCP approved kitchen in Manukau, Auckland and work with an awesome and talented team of friends.
